Life Events

Our clergy are available to all those living in the town and are happy to conduct Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals for all, regardless of their existing link with our churches. The clergy also welcome being informed of those in particular need who may welcome a visit or other support.

Weddings

We have two wonderful, historic buildings in Portishead that make an ideal venue for your wedding.

St Peter’s Church

Just off the High Street, is over seven hundred years old. It seats 200, has a traditional organ and choir, a wonderful set of bells and an award-winning garden as the perfect location for your photographs.

St Nicholas’ Church

On the Nore Road, is 100 years old and the former chapel of the Nautical School. Set on the edge of an area of woodland, it seats 150, has a traditional organ and choir, and has a wonderful long aisle for the grand entrance of the bride.

You can book a wedding at either of our churches if you or your partner or any of your parents live or have lived in Portishead, regardless of your current connection with either church. Even if you have never lived in Portishead it may still be possible to get married in one of our churches so why not give us a call!

We are registered for Church of England weddings but are very happy for ministers from other denominations to take an active part in the ceremony.

We enjoy working with couples to shape the ceremony to their requirements and are happy to involve others in the ceremony. Just talk to us and share your ideas so we can work with you in making the service all that you would want it to be.

In the first instance couples for either church should contact our administrator Rachel at our Church Office

Baptisms

A Christening/Baptism is a wonderful way to celebrate the arrival of your new baby. This special service is a way of saying thank you to God for the gift of your child and affirming your desire for your child to grow up as a member of God’s family.

We would be delighted to help you arrange the christening/baptism of your child at either St Peter’s or St Nicholas’ Church. In the first instance please contact our Church Office.

We hold monthly baptism services at St Peter’s Church in the afternoon on a Sunday. We also invite the families of those baptised to bring their children along to the 9.15 God's Family at Worship service to be welcomed into the Family of God. For details of Baptisms at St Nicholas’ please contact the Church Office.

Whilst many are baptised as babies, Baptism can take place at any age. Older children, young people and adults who wish to be baptised, please contact the Church Office to arrange to meet a member of the clergy.

Those who have been baptised can continue their Christian journey by being confirmed. Confirmation is a public affirmation of the faith journey begun at baptism. There is a special course we run to help prepare people for Confirmation which helps explain more about the Christian faith and the life of the Church. We usually run one Confirmation Course each year and it is open to anyone to adults and young people 11 years or older. To learn more about Confirmation please contact one our clergy team.

Funerals

''Death belongs to life as birth does
The walk is in the raising of the foot
as in the laying of it down.''
Rabindranath Tagore

Our Clergy Team are available to conduct funerals either at St Peter’s or at St Nicholas’ Church or at a local Crematorium. The clergy may be contacted directly or via one of the local Funeral Directors. The clergy will meet with the family to discuss the arrangements and help shape the service in response to the family’s wishes and are happy to conduct both traditional and non-traditional services. No previous connection with the church is required.

Whilst St Peter’s Churchyard is now closed for burials, we have a Garden of Remembrance where Cremated Remains may be buried. Burial is available locally at Portishead Cemetery. The Funeral Directors can advise on other options.

At St Peter’s Church there is a Book of Remembrance where the names of departed loved ones may be recorded. The page where their name is recorded will be open on the anniversary of their death and they will be remembered in the daily prayers offered in church on that day. A form for requesting an entry in the Book may be downloaded here.
