Welcome to Portishead Church of England

Welcome to Portishead Church of England serving the whole of the town of Portishead. We have two churches: St Peter’s situated between Church Road North and Church Road South off the High Street and St Nicholas’ situated along the coast on Nore Road.  We work in close partnership with our two church primary schools, St Peter’s and Trinity, and in association with the St Barnabas Centre, where our church office is based.

We strive to be a Christ-shaped community responding to the liberating love of God, celebrating the joys of life, struggling together with the pains and challenges of life and acknowledging the certainties, doubts and questions faith can bring. In addition to our regular pattern of Sunday worship we have a wide range of activities for all ages as well as seeking to be actively involved in the life of our town.
Our clergy are available to all those living in the town and are happy to conduct Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals for all, regardless of their existing link with our churches.  The clergy also welcome being informed of those in particular need who may welcome a visit or other support.
We hope you will enjoy exploring this site and discovering more about the life of Portishead Church of England and all that it has to offer.

'Churches Together' invite you to help 'fill the hunger gap’.

Studies have shown that children who do not eat well over the summer holidays have poorer educational attainment when they return to school than their better fed peers. Families in OUR town are struggling and living in poverty. With your help we aim to provide a hot meal in the holidays for some of the most vulnerable families in our community, and build relationships with families in desperate need of the loving support of our compassionate churches. Together we can make this happen. We are looking for folk who can cook, welcome, chat & make friends and pray. You are warmly invited to join us for coffee, cake & a no-obligation open evening on Weds 17th July 7.30pm at Portishead Methodist Church hall. More info from Rev Nick Moxon 01275 844917, email MakeALunchPortishead@gmail.com.

Services on Sunday 21st July

Next Sunday - 21st July there will not be an 11.15am service at St Peter’s church. We hope instead that everyone will join us at the 9.30am service St Nicholas’ church where we will be marking Jenny Sully’s retirement as a reader. Contact the church office or Peter Duncan if you need a lift to St Nicholas’ church that day.

Partnership for Missional Church

As part of our journey with Partnership for Missional Church we have created a timeline for our parish. This includes event that we're proud of, events that make us sad, and events that give us hope for the future. For details see the photographs here.

The Lighthouse Café at St Nicholas's Church

The Lighthouse café is open every Thursday:

  • delicious home-made cakes,
  • a place to meet friends,
  • a community hub and information point,
  • a space and time you can help shape and, if you need it a listening ear.
