Eco Church
Portishead Church of England believe God has entrusted his Creation, which he loves, to us and it is our responsibility to care for it.
What is an Eco church?
Eco church is a scheme run by A. Rocha UK, equipping churches to care for God’s creation through their worship, buildings, land, community engagement and individual lifestyles.
Registered churches complete an online survey. Points are accumulated in each of the areas and awards can be earned at bronze, silver and gold level.
Why did we register for Eco church?
As a parish, we are passionate about caring for God’s creation. We have tried to show care for the environment, locally and globally, and to be good stewards of the resources God has given us.
We have two beautiful buildings, a churchyard, a garden, and a wooded glade, all of which are loved and used by the church and the wider community.
Registering for Eco church gave us a structure to help plan for and create a sustainable and environmentally friendly future here.
The stated vision of A. Rocha is
“..for churches of all denominations to care for creation as an integral part of loving their neighbours and following God faithfully”
This is our aim here in the parish of Portishead and is why we registered for the scheme.

Fairtrade Places of Worship
St Nicholas’ and St Peter’s have been recognised as Fairtrade Places of Worship. This award is a sign of our faith in action, showing our commitment to justice and care for creation through the choices we make.
Our Eco Journey
We are so thankful for the creativity, dedication, and care shown by the parish as we continue on our Eco Church journey. From small everyday changes to big projects, together we are making a real difference.
Watch the Bishop’s message celebrating this work — and if you look really carefully, you might just spot the Re-Creation message that headlines the Eco Church parish noticeboard.
Plastic Count
Some of us in the church community took part in The Big Plastic Count challenge back in March.
The results are in. And they are pretty shocking. Check this out and let's help change the way the world works.
