Special Services

In addition to our regular pattern of services we also have a number of special services each year.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
All the different churches in town cancel their regular Sunday services and come together for a special united service.  This is usually held at Gorando School

Ash Wednesday
The beginning of Lent is marked by special services including the traditional act of Ashing when those who wish are marked with the sign of the cross on their forehead in ash.  On this day there is a service at 10.30 at St Nicholas’ and 8pm at St Peter’s.

Holy Week
In the week leading up to Easter there are extra services to help us mark the special events in the last days of Jesus’ life which are remembered in this week.  There is usually a service each evening which on Thursday evening is a Communion service and includes the Ceremony of Foot-washing.  On Good Friday there is an Act of Witness in the High Street with other churches from the town.  There is then an hour’s time of reflection at 2pm at each church and in the evening a devotional concert at St Nicholas’.  On Easter Eve there is a special vigil service at St Nicholas’ at 9pm including the Lighting of the Easter Bonfire.  On Easter Sunday morning there is a sun-rise service at Battery Point, held together with the other churches in town.

Ascension Day & Corpus Christi
Both these special days are marked with services at 8pm in one of our churches.  On Corpus Christi those who are authorised for Chailce and Paten ministry are invited to re-affirm their commitment to their special ministry.

St Peter’s Patronal Festival
On the Sunday nearest 29th July we hold a special United Parish Eucharist to celebrate the Patronal Festival of St Peter’s Church and to give thanks for all those who have maintained and sustained the ministry of St Peter’s Church over the generations.  On this day all our congregations come together and there are no 9.15, 9.30 or 11.15 services.

Nautical School Service
On the first Sunday of September we hold a special service at 11.30am at St Nicholas’ to remember the work of the former Portishead Nautical School.  We are always pleased to welcome former boys from the school for this service.

Remembrance Sunday
Portishead Town Remembrance Service is held at St Peter’s Church which is the home of the town’s war memorial.  The service is held at 10.50am and includes the national 2 minutes silence.  The service follows on from the Remembrance Parade through the High Street.  On Remembrance Day itself at 11am there is an Act of Remembrance in the Precinct on the High Street.

St Nicholas’ Patronal Festival
On the Sunday nearest 5th December we hold a special United Parish Eucharist to celebrate the Patronal Festival of St Nicholas’ Church and to give thanks for all those who have maintained and sustained the ministry of St Nicholas’ Church over the generations.  On this day all our congregations come together and there are no 9.15, 9.30 or 11.15 services.

Christingle Services
Christingle Services are held in both our churches during Advent, at 3pm & 5pm at St Peter’s and 4pm at St Nicholas’ Church.  Christingle is a tradition imported from Moravia and during the service each child is presented with a Christingle which is a decorated orange with a candle.  Money raised from this service is for the work of the Children’s Society.

Nativity Service
On the Sunday before Christmas at 9.15am at St Peter’s the children from our churches come together to perform a Nativity Play which they have rehearsed the day before.  All children who wish are welcome to take part in this service.

Carol Services
On the Sunday before Christmas at both our churches there is the traditional service of Nine Lessons and Carols by candlelight.  Both services start at 6pm

Crib and Toy Services
On Christmas Eve we hold Crib and Toy services at 2pm and 4pm at St Peter's Church and at 3pm and 5pm at St Nicholas' Church.  During these services the Cribs are blest and those who come bring toys to be given to children escaping domestic violence living in the safety on one of the local refuges.

Christmas
A Midnight Mass is held at both churches at 11.30 pm on Christmas Eve and then there are 8am and 10.30am services at St Peter’s and a 9.30am service at St Nicholas’ on Christmas Day.

Details about these services are always displayed on this website and at the churches themselves.
