The Portishead Parish Prayer
Grant us a vision, Lord,
to see what we can achieve;
to reach beyond ourselves;
to share our lives with others;
to stretch our capability;
to increase our sense of purpose;
to be aware of where we can help;
to be sensitive to your presence;
to give heed to your constant call.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer – the Christian family prayer
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those
who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.   Amen.
A Prayer for Peace
O God
of many names,
Lover of all nations,
we pray for peace
in our hearts,
in our homes,
in our nation,
in our world.
The peace of your will;
the peace of our need.
The Universal Prayer for Peace
Lead me from death to life,
from falsehood to truth.
Lead me from despair to hope,
from fear to trust.
Lead me from hate to love,
from war to peace.
Let peace fill our heart, our world, our universe.
If you wish to pray for others…
Watch now, dear Lord,
with those who wake or watch or weep tonight,
and give your angels charge over those who sleep.
Tend your sick ones, O Lord Christ,
rest your weary ones,
bless your dying ones, soothe your suffering ones,
pity your afflicted ones, shield your joyous ones,
and all for your love’s sake. Amen
St Augustine
If someone has died….
God our Father,
thank you that you have made
each of us in your own image,
and given us gifts and talents
with which to serve you.
Thank you for N,
the years I shared with him/her,
the good I saw in him/her,
the love I received from him/her.
Now give me strength and courage
to leave him/her in your care,
confident in the promise of eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
              The Funeral Service
If you are grieving...
O God,
who brought us to birth
and in whose arms we die,
in our grief and shock
contain and comfort us;
embrace us with your love,
give us hope in our confusion
and grace to let go into new life;
through Jesus Christ.  Amen.
The Funeral Service
If  you are thankful….
We thank you God
for the mystery of your presence here with us.
We thank you for the mystery of ourselves.
We thank you for your sense of compassion.
We thank you for the things of this world.
We thank you for being you,
and for making us - us,
unique as you are unique,
mysterious as you are mysterious,
loving and caring as you are loving and caring.
Teach us Lord to use the gifts you have given us.
Teach us to share them with one another.
Give us grace to use our gifts
to bring healing to the world.

If you are feeling troubled….
Be present, Spirit of God, within us,
your dwelling place our home;
may your light dispel our darkness,
our troubles calmed by your peace,
all evil redeemed by your love,
all pain transformed in the suffering of Christ,
and all dying glorified in his risen life. Amen

God to enfold you,
Christ to uphold you,
Spirit to keep you in heaven’s sight:
So may God grace you,
heal and embrace you,
lead you through darkness into the light.

A Prayer for Guidance
O Jesus,
Be the canoe
that holds us in the sea of life:
Be the rudder
that keeps us in the straight way;
Be the outrigger
that supports us in times
of great temptation;
Let your Spirit be our sail
that carries us through each day.
Keep our bodies and spirits strong,
so we can paddle steadfastly on
in the voyage of life.
In your name we pray.
 A prayer from Melanesia - adapted.
Make Poverty History
Give us, O Lord, churches that will be more courageous than cautious;
that will not merely “comfort the afflicted
but “afflict the comfortable”;
that will not only love the world
but also demand justice;
that will not remain silent
when people are calling for a voice;
that will not pass by on the other side when
wounded humanity is waiting to be healed;
that will not only call us to worship
but also send us to witness;
that will follow Christ
even when the way points to a Cross.
To this end we offer ourselves
in the name of him who loved us
also gave himself for us.

Jesus’ Summary of the Law
Our Lord Jesus Christ said:
The first commandment is this:
‘Hear, O Israel,
the Lord our God is the only Lord.
You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your mind
and with all your strength.’
The second is this:
‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’
There is no other commandment
greater than these.
On these two commandments
hang all the law and the prophets.
The Beatitudes
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger
and thirst after righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
or they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are those who suffer persecution
for righteousness' sake,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
