Blessings

Special moments in our lives can also be marked with special prayers.  We list here just some of the occasions we are already asked to do, but are always willing to discuss other events that we may be able to help you celebrate. At such a new beginnings, whether or not you are a church-goer, it can be appropriate to ask God’s blessing and guidance.

Blessing after a Civil Wedding
We are happy to do this on the same day as the civil ceremony or on a later occasion.  It is a way of asking God’s blessing on the new relationship and of placing the love we feel for each other in the context of God’s great love for each of us.

Prayers to celebrate a Civil Partnership
Our clergy are happy to say prayers to celebrate a Civil Partnership and this may be done on the same day or on a later occasion. It is a way of asking God’s blessing on the new relationship and of placing the love we feel for each other in the context of God’s great love for each of us.

Renewal of Wedding Vows & Thanksgiving for Marriage

At special moments in our marriages it can be appropriate to thank God for the years shared together and to re-affirm our commitment to our partner.  These services may include the blessing of a new ring or other special jewellery.

House Blessing
Moving into a new home is always a special moment and, on  a suitable occasion, the clergy can visit and bless your house.   We all hope our new home will be a place of safety and happiness and that we will soon feel settled and “at home”.  At a house blessing a member of the clergy comes and says prayers in the rooms of the home and sprinkles Holy Water as a symbol of new life, healing and deliverance from evil.

Boat Blessing
All who travel on the seas have respect for the forces of nature and a sense of the presence of the Creator.  Blessing a boat either at its purchase or at the beginning of a special voyage is an expression of our desire for safety on the seas and harmony with creation and the Creator.  Holy water is used as an expression of this blessing.

Prayers for Healing
The clergy are always willing to meet with individuals or small groups of family or friends to pray for those in particular need, those facing illness, an operation or going through a time of anxiety.  This can take place in church or at home or in hospital and may, if appropriate, include the Laying on of Hands or Anointing with Holy Oil.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of Child
The birth of a child is always a special moment and, particularly after a difficult birth, it can be appropriate to hold a simple service of thanksgiving to thank God for the gift of this new life and for safe delivery.  Some parents who are uncertain as to whether or not to have their child baptised/christened ask for a service of thanksgiving instead.

Each of these occasions can be as formal or as informal as is appropriate for you and your circumstances.  They are simple but significant ways of marking the beginning of a new chapter in your life and offer the assurance of God’s presence in your new circumstances.
